Depression After a Breakup or Divorce: When to Get Help

Everyone Says Move On. Your Heart and Body Say Otherwise

Yes, a counsellor can work with a depressed mood, or depression that starts after a relationship ends. Some of the signs that separate normal breakup grief from depression are: a very low mood that has lasted more than 8 weeks, a lack of interest or pleasure in hobbies, an inability to manage basic life tasks at home and work, feeling that life is hopeless and having thoughts of not wanting to exist. If any of those fit, depression support at Mindwise starts with one call, no referral needed. It is important to note that Depression is not a simplistic checklist, and needs to be assessed thoroughly.

That is one simplistic answer. Now let’s go deeper into other symptoms you may be experiencing.

It has been two months, maybe three. Perhaps even a year. You still have trouble sleeping. Food tastes like cardboard. You replay the last conversation on a loop and every time it ends the same way. Why? Was I not enough? How could this happen? Your friends were kind for the first few weeks, then the replies got shorter. Sound familiar?

This article covers why a breakup can tip into depression, why you cannot sleep or eat, how to stop the self-blame loop, what to do when friends stop listening, and how to hold yourself together during a divorce or relationship breakup in Singapore. If you want more practical details on sessions and fees, go on to the anxiety and depression treatment page.

Can a Breakup Really Cause Clinical Depression?

It can. A breakup is a loss. Whether the person has passed on or just left, our brains handle loss in similar ways. Sleep, appetite, and concentration all take a hit. For some people, this settles and symptoms of grief gradually diminish.

For others, the acute symptoms of grief do not lessen. The specific loss may combine with something else, like a stressful job, an earlier loss, or a pattern of feeling abandoned. Grief may then turn into something deeper, like a prolonged depressed mood. These pathways can respond to treatment.

Faith Hogan, a registered counsellor, from Mindwise, has spent more than two decades working with people. Her desire to support deeper healing led her into counselling and psychotherapy, and over the years she has seen where untreated depression ends up. She would rather see you at week 8 than at month 8.

How Do I Know If My Sadness Has Turned Into Depression?

These signs are important. Time: Weeks pass and nothing changes. Function: you are missing work, skipping meals, or not leaving the house. Safety: you have thought about not wanting to live. Depression is more than a checklist of symptoms, and it’s best to have a trained health professional assess your mood and coping.

Talk to someone soon.

Why Can I Not Sleep or Eat Since My Partner Left?

Your nervous system is impacted after a relationship ends. The amygdala (the part of your brain that senses threats) could be interpreting the end of the relationship as a major loss, so your body pumps out stress hormones that may keep you alert and kill your appetite.

Lying awake often makes the cycle of thoughts worse. Not eating makes the mood worse. The two feed into each other, and that loop is often what turns a hard month into depression. Counselling helps identify and stop unhealthy loops.

Why Do I Keep Replaying the Breakup?

The mind hates an unsolved problem.  After a breakup it goes looking for a solution, or a source of relief, and so it plays the last argument, the words you said, the thing you may not have done well enough, over and over, hoping that this time it will find the fix.

The part of your brain that helps you with logic and reasoning also goes offline after such a loss, so you may find yourself struggling to make good decisions or process emotions adequately.

There is no fix. The relationship has ended. But the loop does not know that, so it keeps running, often at night, mostly when you aren’t doing anything or are tired. It’s frustrating when you can see it happening and still cannot stop it.

What Do I Do When My Friends Have Stopped Listening?

Friends have a limit. Most people around you may have said everything they know how to say. “It is their loss.” “Time heals.” “You will meet someone better.” After that they may go quiet, or they say it is time to move on, and you sometimes feel worse for sharing your thoughts.

It may not be you, however. Your friends aren’t trained for this. Carrying someone through a depression  mood is a job, and your friends may not know how to better support you.

And that is when counselling comes into the picture.

How Do I Cope With Depression During a Divorce?

A divorce in Singapore, and in most other places is not one event. It is months of paperwork, mediation, and decisions about assets and children, and each step reopens and causes wounds. A contested divorce can run for a year or longer. Depression during that time is common and it makes every decision harder.

If you have children, you still have to work with your ex. Handovers, school events, WhatsApp threads about who is picking up whom. Co-parenting while depressed means holding it together for the kids when you cannot hold it together for yourself.

Counselling during a divorce has multiple aims. First, to keep you functioning through the legal process so you can make decisions more effectively. Second, processing your emotions. Those are different things, and mixing them costs people money and sleep. A common third function, is for identity consolidation. Who are you if you aren’t a spouse anymore? How will the future look? How do you prevent this from happening again?

If the divorce is not final and you are unsure whether it should be, Mindwise also offers relationship counselling. Individual sessions can help you get clear on what you want before you decide whether to bring your partner in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a counsellor in Singapore help with depression after a relationship ends?

Yes. A registered counsellor can treat depression that begins after a breakup or divorce using talk therapy or somatic methods. No referral is needed for private counselling in Singapore. If symptoms are severe, the counsellor refers you to a psychiatrist and continues alongside medication.

Is it normal to still feel depressed three months after a breakup?

Sadness at three months is common. Depression at three months is a signal to get help. If at three months you still cannot function, feel that life is meaningless, or can’t leave the house, it is best to get assessed for potential depression and to get professional emotional support.

Why can I not sleep at all since my partner left me?

A breakup puts your nervous system into alarm mode. Stress hormones keep you alert at night and reduces the appetite. Lying awake allows the mind to wander undirected which may keep the mind alert and feed insomnia.

Is it normal to feel depressed even though I was the one who ended the relationship?

Yes. Ending a relationship is still a loss, and it doesn’t always hurt less. Sometimes having made the choice leaves more emotional conflict. You may doubt your decision, and go back and forth about whether there was anything else that may have helped make things better. You’re also left with facing your ex’s grief about being left, being demonized or judged by others, guilt, or a whole variety of other painful emotions.

You do not have to have everything figured out before asking for help.
